History of Mehrangarh Fort
The Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the ruler of Mandore and the founder of Jodhpur city. When founding Jodhpur, he realized that the location was safe, isolated, and therefore apt to be his capital after Mandore. Then he decided to build a massive fort sprawling over an area of 5 km with a height of 125 m to keep his loved ones and people safe in his kingdom.
Legends have to say that Rao Jodha had to forcefully relocate a hermit named Cheeria Nathji from the hill to build the fort. Then he ended up with a curse. The hermit cursed the fortress will always suffer the scarcity of water. Rao Jodha created a temple and a house for him within the premises to get rid of the curse. Along with this, many other stories revolve around, followed by the king reducing the curse effects. Some say that he buried alive an ordinary man named Raja Ram Meghwal in the fort’s foundation to repeal the impact of the curse. Since the man agreed to give up on his life, the king promised to take care of his family throughout their life.
It can be rumors or truth. The Mehrangarh Fort remains an iconic attraction and one of the best places on the Jodhpur Sightseeing Tour.
